Breaking! Protesters attack and loot MTN office in Abuja.

Angry protesters have broken into an office of one of Nigeria's telecommunications company MTN in the Maitama area of Abuja on Thursday, February 23, The Cable reports.

The protesters attacked some members of staff of the organisation and customers and carted away valuables.

The Cable quotes a witness as saying that it was the timely intervention of policemen that prevented the protesters from destroying the building.

The policemen have now taken over the area while work has been suspended at the office.

MTN head office in South Africa has issued a statement on the incident, it was learnt.

The attack came just hours after chairman of MTN Nigeria Pascal Dozie led a delegation of the company to meet with acting president Prof. Yemi Osinbajo at the presidential villa in Abuja on Wednesday, February 22.

The identity of the protesters has not been revealed.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised alarm over plans by some individuals to use students for anti-xenophobic protests.

The association said the protest have be scheduled to hold on Thursday, February 23 in major cities across Nigeria.
