Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha Believes Nigerian's Are Not Happy As He Urges Air Force To Create Happiness Department

11 December 0

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state has said that 89 per cent of Nigerians are not truly happy, maintaining that only "four per cent could really be happy to some extent, while seven per cent might claim to be happy."
He argued that the vital aspect of human existence, which is happiness, must be addressed.
Okorocha, who recently created the Ministry of Happiness and Purpose Fulfillment, made the claim when officers of the Nigeria Air Force, led by the Air Officer Commanding Ground Training Command, Air Vice Marshal Sampson Akpasa, visited him at the Government House at the weekend.
Okorocha said agitations, insurgence, and hate-speech come up when people are not happy.
He said,
'' I commend the Nigeria Air Force for the good job they are doing in this country, especially their fight against insurgency and currently, what is happening in Numan and all the efforts they are making to restore peace in that area. I’m particularly proud of the Nigerian Air Force.
But one thing is certain, if you observe recently, the level of crisis and agitations are on the increase. While we fight insurgence, I would advise that we also should find the cause of this agitation.
Agitation comes up when people are not happy and the whole essence of life is to be happy. For this reason, I advice that the Air Force too, just like what I have done recently, which most people didn’t understand, should create a department for Happiness and Purpose Fulfillment.
This will help to address the need of even junior officers, who may have some forms of dissatisfaction in the discharge of their duties.
Sometimes, you may think that they are happy when they are not and this sabotages the efforts of the Federal Government, the governor counselled.
In Imo State, we have introduced the Ministry of Happiness and Purpose Fulfillment.
I urge the Air Force to emulate what we are doing in Imo State to let everyone have a sense of belonging,'' Okorocha added.

See What Gov. Rochas Okorocha Said About The Rumor Of MonkeyPox In The State.

11 October 0
Gov. Rochas
Earlier today in some states in the South East, Imo state included, there was a pandemonium, after an undiluted rumuor broke out that some soldiers were going from school to school, injecting students with Monkeypox.
Imo state government has released a statement denying claims that the Monkeypox virus is in the state.
Statement reads;
The Attention of the Imo State government has been drawn to the wicked and unfounded rumor being spread by the wicked ones over the monkey pox virus which created undue anxiety in Owerri, the state capital especially among some parents, on Wednesday, October 11, 2017.
The State government wants to inform Imo people in particular and the general public that the monkey pox virus is not in Imo and will never be in Imo in Jesus Name.

The federal Government has named few states that have had one or two cases and the states that should be monitored closely and Imo State is not among any of the groups. So these wicked rumor mongers in the state will surely reap the ugly fruits of their ugly acts.
Again, no child or pupil or student has been immunized or is being immunized as part of the rumour had carried, because there is no need for such action.
However, the government is on the alert and will take the necessary action if the need arises and Imo people will duly be informed. But for now, there is no cause for any alarm. Imo is in the hand of God.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor

Why is sex education important?

03 October 0

If your child's school does not have sex education in its curriculum, then you will need to have these adult conversations with your kids. In fact, regardless of what your kids learn in school, you should still teach your child your own values and beliefs. HIV and AIDS are very real and still have no cure. Sex education is not a sign that the country's moral or social situation is low. It's just a necessity to discourage inappropriate behaviours in kids!

Some parents misunderstand the concept of sex education. They wrongly believe that it is only about issues relating to the sexual intercourse. They will be very surprised that this subject also covers social interactions, like:

  •  Shaking hands;

  •  Hugging;

  •  Holding hands;

  •  Showing appreciation;

  •  Tolerance.

Also, some parents prefer that their children stay ignorant when it comes to sex. You can find situations like this in some religious societies where sexual relations topic is considered to be a taboo.

Sex education in Nigeria raises one important question – how to teach kids this subject? Different cultures offer different methods of teaching. For instance, Japanese kids start to learn about sexual behavior from the very early age, and parents do not even hide nude magazines from them.

Sex Education at School

Nigeria is a country where traditional beliefs prevail over the question of sex education. However, it's still possible and necessary to implement sex education Nigeria in every school. First, they need to understand that sexual education is not all about sexual intercourse. It's about the protection and socially acceptable behavior of kids.

For instance, what exactly should be thought to elementary and nursery school children? Experts have the following answers:

  •  Provide information to students about socially acceptable behavior between sexes. For instance, suitable ways of showing affection to somebody.

  •  Teaching of socially accepted gestures, like handshakes, hugs or holding hands;

  •  Showing examples of behavior for kids of different genders in various situations;

  •  Instructing them about the ideals of social and moral etiquette between genders.

As we can clearly see, there is no hint about sexual intercourse. Kids will be taught about general strategies of behavior for different sexes. It's a quite acceptable topic even in the most religious societies.

However, when it comes to older kids, topics of conversation could be a lot more controversial. Let's take a look what topics can be covered in secondary schools.

  •  The teaching of ways of showing affection for both sexes.

  •  Providing information about the socially accepted ways of interacting with the opposite gender.

  •  Providing information about sexually transmitted diseases and ways both genders can be protected;

  •  Lesson about sexual intercourse.

The most obvious question that will raise debates in the above-mentioned list is the last one. Sexual pleasure can be seen as a taboo in a lot of cultures. For instance, masturbation which is considered by many religions to be a sin! This is one of the reasons why sex education is such a controversial topic.

Top 3 benefits of sex education

1. It helps to prevent HIV and AIDS.

Sex education is the first line of defense when it comes to fighting HIV and AIDS. Sex education for teenagers is very important as they are the most likely to be victims of these diseases!

2. It teaches socially accepted behavior.

Men and women are different, and they should act differently in certain situations. For instance, both sexes should find the appropriate ways to interact with each other and also understand when to put up boundaries.

3. It teaches about the body structure.

Just imagine a situation where “a female student runs to the principal's office screaming that she is bleeding out” – what do you think when you read this? The student just got her period and she has no clue what's happening! It is important for students to be aware of the basics of their body structure. It's especially needed for teenagers who are entering puberty!

Sex education in Nigeria is one of the most debatable topics. Nevertheless, sex education as a school subject is accepted by many countries in the world. We need to come up with a concept that lets us embrace our values while giving kids the information that they need.

President Buhari’s Independence Day Broadcast

01 October 0

In addressing the country today,the president issued his take on the level of Security, Economy and Corruption in Nigeria
Read full address below.
October 1st remains a special date for all Nigerians as this marks the day when we attained one of the most precious of human desires — freedom.
Over the years the country has gone through trials and tribulations, but October 1st is always a day for celebrations.
It is a day for thanksgiving, reflection and re-dedication.
It is also a day for remembrance. We should remind ourselves of the recent journey from 1999 – 2015, when our country happily returned to democratic rule.
However, in spite of oil prices being an average of $100 per barrel and about 2.1m barrels a day, that great piece of luck was squandered and the country’s social and physical infrastructure neglected.
We were left with no savings and huge infrastructure deficit.
The APC Government’s Campaign rallying cry to restore security, re-balance the economy and fight corruption was not all rhetoric.
The country must first be secured. The economy must be re-balanced so that we do not depend on oil alone. We must fight corruption which is Nigeria’s Number One Enemy. Our Administration is tackling these tasks in earnest.
In the past two years, Nigeria has recorded appreciable gains in political freedom. A political Party at the Centre losing elections of State Governor, National Assembly seat and even State Assemblies to the opposition parties is new to Nigeria. Added to these are complete freedom to associate, to hold and disseminate opinions. Such developments clearly attest to the country’s growing political development. But like all freedoms, this is open to abuse.
Recent calls on re-structuring, quite proper in a legitimate debate, has let in highly irresponsible groups to call for dismemberment of the country. We can not and we will not allow such advocacy.
As a young Army Officer, I took part from the beginning to the end in our tragic civil war costing about 2m lives, resulting in fearful destruction and untold suffering. Those who are agitating for a re-run were not born by 1967 and have no idea of the horrendous consequences of the civil conflict which we went through.
I am very disappointed that responsible leaders of these communities do not warn their hot-headed youths what the country went through. Those who were there should tell those who were not there, the consequences of such folly.
At all events, proper dialogue and any desired constitutional changes should take place in a rational manner, at the National and State Assemblies. These are the proper and legal fora for National debate, not some lop-sided, un-democratic body with pre-determined set of objectives.
Government is keeping up the momentum of dialogue with stakeholders in the Niger Delta to keep the peace. We intend to address genuine grievances of the communities.
Government is grateful to the responsible leadership of those communities and will pursue lasting peace in the Niger Delta.
SECURITY
On security, Nigerians must be grateful to our gallant Armed Forces for rolling back the frontiers of Boko Haram’s terrorism, defeating them and reducing them to cowardly attacks on soft and vulnerable targets.
Nigeria is grateful to its neighbours and the international community for the collective efforts to defeat this world-wide menace of terrorism.
Not even the most organized and most equipped police and security forces in the world can escape the menace of modern day terrorism, as we have seen in recent years in Europe and other parts of the world.
But we are not letting up. Our Armed Forces in an effort to enhance the operational capability of troops of OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE have established Mobile Strike Teams in the North East. These will ensure the final push to wipe out the remnants of Boko Haram.
In addition, through targeted air strikes most of the leadership and identified logistics bases and routes of the insurgents have been neutralized. The Armed Forces have established a Naval presence in the Lake Chad Basin as part of the coordinated military efforts to curtail the movements or re-emergence of the sect in the area.
Government is working round the clock to ensure release of the remaining Chibok girls, as well as other persons in Boko Haram captivity. Government will continue to support the Armed Forces and other security agencies to fight not only terrorism, but kidnapping, armed robberies, herdsmen/farmers violence and to ensure peace, stability and security in our country.
ECONOMY
With respect to the economy, the Government has remained pro-active in its diversification policy. The Federal Government’s agricultural Anchor Borrowers Programme, which I launched in November 2015, has been an outstanding success with:
· N43.92 billion released through the CBN and 13 participating institutions,
· 200,000 small holder farmers from 29 states of the federation benefitting,
· 233,000 hectares of farmland cultivating eight commodities, namely Rice, Wheat, Maize, Cotton, soya-beans, Poultry, Cassava and Groundnuts, in addition to fish farming.
These initiatives have been undertaken in close collaboration with the states. I wish to commend the efforts of the Governors of Kebbi, Lagos, Ebonyi and Jigawa States for their support to the rice and fertilizer revolutions.
Equally commendable are contributions of the Governors of Ondo, Edo, Delta, Imo, Cross River, Benue, Ogun, Kaduna and Plateau States for their support for the Presidential initiative for palm oil, rubber, cashew, cassava, potatoes and other crops.
With the abundance of rainfall last year and this year, agriculture has enjoyed Divine intervention.
Since December last year, this Administration has produced over 7 million 50Kg bags of fertilizer. Eleven blending plants with a capacity of 2.1 million metric tons have been reactivated. We have saved $150 million in foreign exchange and N60 billion in subsidy. Fertilizer prices have dropped from N13,000 per 50Kg bag to N5,500.
Furthermore, a new presidential initiative is starting with each state of the Federation creating a minimum of 10,000 jobs for unemployed youths, again with the aid of CBN’s development finance initiatives.
Power remains a huge problem. As of September 12th, production of power reached an all — time high of 7,001 Megawatts. Government is increasing its investment, clearing up the operational and financial log jam bedeviling the industry. We hope to reach 10,000 Megawatts by 2020.
Key priorities include better energy mix through solar and Hydro technologies. I am glad to say that after many years of limbo, Mambilla Power Project has taken off.
Elsewhere in the economy the special window created for manufacturers, investors and exporters, foreign exchange requirements has proved very effective. Since April, about $7 billion has come through this window alone. The main effect of these policies is improved confidence in the economy and better investment sentiments.
The country has recorded 7 consecutive months of lower inflation, Naira rate is beginning to stabilize, appreciating from N525 per $1 in February this year to N360 today. Broad-based economic growth is leading us out of recession.
Furthermore, in order to stabilize the polity, the Federal Government gave additional support to states in the form of:
· State Excess Crude Account loans,
· Budget Support Facility,
· Stabilization Fund Release
to states and local governments as follows:
· N200 billion in 2015
· N441 billion in 2016
· N1 trillion in 2017
Altogether totaling N1.642 trillion.
This was done to enable states to pay outstanding salaries, pensions and small business suppliers who had been all but crippled over the years.
In addition, the Government’s current N500 billion Special Intervention Programme is targeting groups through;
· Home Grown School Feeding Programme,
· N-Power Job creation to provide loans to small-scale traders and artisans,
· Conditional Cash Transfer,
· Family Homes Fund and
· Social Housing Scheme.
CORRUPTION
Fellow Nigerians,
We are fully aware that fighting corruption was never going to be a straightforward task. We expected corrupt elements to use any weapon to fight back, mainly judicial obstruction and political diversion. But we are determined to eradicate corruption from our body politic.
In this fight, the Government has:
· Empowered teams of prosecutors,
· Assembled detailed databases,
· Accelerated the recovery of stolen funds.
The Administration’s new institutional reforms include:
· Enforcing Treasury Single Account,
· Whistle-Blowers Policy,
· Integrated Payroll Personnel and Information System.
We have signed multi-lateral cooperation agreements on criminal matters with friendly countries. There are signs of increasing cooperation from the Judiciary. Recently the Chief Justice of Nigeria directed Heads of all our Courts of first instance and Appeal to accelerate hearings of corruption cases and dismiss any judicial officers found to have been compromised.
Justice Salami has just been appointed to chair the Judiciary’s anti-graft committee. Government expects a lot from this Committee.
I commend the National Assembly for refocusing on its oversight committees. They should, in addition, ensure swift passage of enabling corruption laws. But fighting corruption is a bottom to top operation. I call on all Nigerians to combat corruption at every turn. By not asking for and refusing to accept a bribe, by reporting unethical practices or by blowing a whistle, together we can beat corruption. The government for its part will work for accountability at all levels – Federal, State and Local Governments. CHANGE will then be real.
As we enter the second half of our term of office, we intend to accelerate progress and intensify our resolve to fix the country’s challenges and problems.
Thank you and a happy holiday to all of you.
God bless our country

Happy Independence day Nigeria, 20 facts about Nigeria

01 October 0

                 By Jegede Joseph

   1960 would remain significant to many african countries, most especially the 'giant' of the African continent, Nigeria. There is a lot of obvious reason not to celebrate with the country in a state many refer to as a 'work in progress', an average Nigerian would ask is there any reason to celebrate Nigeria at 57? Significantly, there are numerous reasons Nigeria like other African why we need to celebrate independence not necessarily for the fun of it, but to ponder and reflect on the gains of independence. Most especially in a time when our unity as a nation is grossly affected by glooming challenges. There are numerous reasons to celebrate Nigeria, but let's consider this 20 facts:

1. Nigeria is the most populated black nation in the world, you cannot deny the strength of a mighty nation like Nigeria, and over 70% of this population are young people between the age of 0-25years.

 2. Nigerians are 1/5th the total population of Black Africa, still talking on human resource strength, we are the giant of Africa.

 3. Nigeria is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, with the International Monetary Fund projections and other economic institutions, the fact still remain arguable. Nigeria is and will be the world’s fastest-growing Entertainment and Media industry between 2017– 2021.

4. Nigeria remains the first African country to win the Olympic Gold Medal in football, football has been considered a national sport. Watching the national football team win is one of the best moments for a Nigerian.

 5. Nigeria with 521 languages is the fourth countries on the list of countries with languages in the world. This includes 510 living languages, two second languages without native speakers and 9 extinct languages. This is amazing to hear @57

6. Nigerians remain the most educated diaspora community in America, we raise the flag high in every part of the world.

7. Nigeria has the highest rate of twin births in the world, compared to any other country. Yoruba and their bloodlines worldwide have the highest rate of twinning (having twins) in the world. And the world is talking about our population, when thy don't know how to give birth to twins. Let the twinning continue.

 8. Nigeria is among the countries with the largest proven reserves of petroleum, in the world. We won't depend on oil alone to be build an efficient economy, but we have abundance of it.

9. We have the second largest delta in the world. With the Niger-Delta region we can boast of this.

10. The richest man in Africa, is a Nigerian, forget the tribe or the religion, He is Alike Dangote, founder of Dangote Group.

 11. River Niger is the largest river in West Africa, providing sources of livelihood to thousands of Africans daily.

12. The state of Taraba has more languages than at least 30 countries in the world combined, you can imagine the dynamic nature of Nigeria.

13. Cross River State has the largest diversity of Butterflies in the world, not just in Africa. So when you want different breeds of butterflies you now where to go.

 14. We  have 7% of all languages in the world combined. Our strength is really in our diversity.

15.The Ancient Benin wall are the longest ancient work enclosing 500 communities at a distance of 6500 sq.km, not even the Great Walls of China can beat this. We ruled the ancient world through our arts and craft, we can and we need to start ruling our world.

16. Nigeria is said to have the highest paid legislators in the world, this might  be controversial, but yes we do, just accept it, we are working on amending the pay too not just the constitution.

 17. Nigeria has an average of 1.5 million applicants to the University every year, wow! Nigerians are educated and they love to be. More than 68% of Nigerians are literate.

 18. The first African country to eradicate Ebola Virus is Nigeria. This was the time when we rolled up our sleeves and fought a common threat, regardless of who needs help, ethnicity and religion was not in the question.

19. The Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, is the second largest in the world in terms of output, producing between 1000 to 2000 films annually with an annual turnover of around $250million. Combining all other adjunct film production would be more.

 20. Nigeria was ranked by Transparency International as the 136th the least country out of 176 on the list, we are not working and fighting on corruption, but we still have 40 countries behind us. We are getting there.

As we celebrate this 57th Independence anniversary, we have a lot of reason to be united as a country and appreciate what we have while we are working towards the perfect picture, remember Rome was not fully built in 57years, we are getting there, play your own role as a citizen too.

 NB: No ethnic biases was considered in this write-up...just One Nigeria.

Must read: Akwa Ibom State to give Nigerians adequate power supply.

24 September 0

Inadequate power is the major obstacle to full economic development in Nigeria and it has remained a concern to many Nigerians.

Businesses have shutdown, companies have ran out of the nation to other African countries where power is more stable and job losses have continued to increase amidst high unemployment rate.

Electricity companies have continued to rip Nigerians off with their estimated billing system, forcing many to pay for darkness.

But the Akwa Ibom State government is doing something to change all that and believes it can give power to Nigerians.

The government of the state has, through private partnership, established an Electric Metering Factory to address meters shortfall.

It was inaugurated on Saturday, as part of the activities marking the 30th anniversary of Akwa Ibom creation.

The factory produces 2.7 million units of meters annually and Governor Udom Emmanuel believes that capacity can be doubled to produce 5.4 million.

“The essence of this industry is to ensure power for all. Once you can buy recharge cards, you can have electricity, it is available for all.

“The project is a private initiative for the betterment of all Akwa Ibom people and for Nigeria at large,” Governor Emmanuel said.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was at the inauguration and he highlighted that poor power supply was a major set back affecting the nation's economy.

He told the gathering that the problem of irregular power supply in Nigeria was caused by inaccurate billing system resulting from insufficient metering machines.

Professor Osinbajo was at the Onna local government area of Akwa Ibom to inaugurate an Electric Metering Factory as part of activities marking the 30th anniversary of Akwa Ibom creation.

He believes Nigeria’s economic development is hinged on effective power supply, but he decried a situation where Distribution Companies (DISCOs) are not been able to collect tariffs because of non-availability of meters.

“The electric metering factory is an important project. Inadequate power is the major obstacle to full economic development in Nigeria.

“We have also identified the fact that DISCO is unable to collect tariffs effectively from consumers because we are unable to afford the cost of metering.

“I think that there is an important policy innovation as there is no restriction on those who can actually produce meter for our consumers,” Osinbajo said.

He commended the Akwa Ibom governor for establishing the metering factory, saying that the Federal Government was looking forward to other factories across the country.

Biafra: US Government Finally States Their View Of IPOB.

24 September 0

The United States Government has stated that it does not view the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organisation, despite its proscription.

This was disclosed by the spokesman for the American Embassy in Nigeria, Russell Brooks.

He maintained that the US is, however, committed to Nigeria’s unity and is in support of all moves that would de-escalate tensions.

“The United States Government is strongly committed to Nigeria’s unity.  Important political and economic issues affecting the Nigerian people, such as the allocation of resources, are worthwhile topics for respectful debate in a democracy.

“Within the context of unity, we encourage all Nigerians to support a de-escalation of tensions and peaceful resolution of grievances.  The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a terrorist organisation under US law,” he told The Punch.

He declined to answer questions on the US position on the agitation for Biafra.

IPOB was on Wednesday, proscribed by the federal government after the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), received the go-ahead from an Abuja High Court as stipulated by the Constitution.

The group was declared a terrorist organisation and the AGF said the order would soon be gazetted.

This immediately followed the group’s condemnation by all the state governors in the South East of Nigeria under the aegis of the South East Governors Forum

Minister of information Lai Mohammed Speaks on Why FG Plans to Stop Entertainers from Shooting Movie and Music Video Production Abroad

17 July
Lai Mohammed Speaks on Why FG Plans to Stop Entertainers from Shooting Movie and Music Video Production AbroadThe Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has clarified the reason why the Federal government plans to stop entertainers and movie makers from shooting movie and music videos outside Nigeria.
On Saturday last week, Lai Mohammed disclosed this plan when he spoke at the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) House in Lagos.
In a recent interview with Premium times, Lai Mohammed disclosed that the proposed ban would help tackle the exploitation of perceived loopholes in the Nigerian Broadcasting Code (NBC).
He said;
“The NBC code today as it stands has been exploited and not defined and that’s why movies being directed by Nigerians with Nigerian actors, actresses can be shot in South Africa and then brought back to be consumed in Nigeria. All we are saying is that we are going to amend the code in a manner that it will not be possible for you to exploit any loophole there to go and shoot outside Nigeria film, music or programs that are meant to be consumed in Nigeria”.
Speaking further, he said “It is not directed at any particular incident, every country should respect the local industry of other countries. For example, in Ghana they introduced a law today that demands visiting actors to pay a thousand dollars to the government coffers while visiting directors and producers pay 5,000 dollars. We must create an enabling environment and also generate revenue from our creative industry. The argument is simple, when you go to shoot a film offshore, you use the work force of that country to develop the capacity of that country and you improve the economy of that country and that is what we are trying to do here.”
