Osinbajo’s Clarion Call For The Rebirth Of A New Nigeria

10 December 0

''A new tribe can emerge. A tribe of men and women from all tribes, ethnicities and faiths; built on principles that all persons are created equal; that resources attain their greatest use when they are rendered for the benefit of all…''
'' In the womb of this ‘New Tribe’ is the greatness of Nigeria.''
KEYNOTE ADDRESS TITLED '' THE NEW TRIBE AND THE REBIRTH OF THE NATION ''DELIVERED BY VICE PRESIDENT YEMI OSINBAJO AT THE 2017 FUTURE AWARD, HELD AT THE FEDERAL PALACE HOTEL, LAGOS, ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 09, 2017.
Protocol:
There are particular moments in the history of Nations when there is a palpable feeling that something new is about to emerge; that the nation can be transformed.
Often it begins with hopelessness and cynicism. It may be that the Nation has laboured under oppressive and divisive circumstances, living with poverty, inequality, bitter ethnic and religious division, and hate.
But in the midst of poverty, corruption, ethnic and religious divisions hope begins to be built in the hearts of some, a new vision is birthed in these people.
Of the number are men and women, young, old, married, single, united by the common belief that the nation can be reborn, that a new nation can be forged from the furnace of pain and despair, that a nation of great values is possible, that the people can be united, that they can together fight corruption, reject the politics of identity and religion and unite around the values common to the attainment of dignity and fulfilment for all.
They are united in the belief that a new tribe can emerge. A tribe of men and women from all tribes, ethnicities and faiths, built on principles, that all persons are created equal, that resources attain their greatest use when they are rendered for the benefit of all, that our best talents must be applied in every task, that we must respect the rule of law and the centrality of law and order, that none will be allowed to steal or waste public resources, that we will prefer and reward excellence and merit, that Government is to create the circumstances for the happiness and prosperity of the majority, that the life of the Nigerian person is our most precious resource, that we must love our nation and love each other, and protect the weak and vulnerable.
This new tribe is one whose ethos is of hard work, whose creed is that all honest labour is dignifying, worthy of respect and reward, and that integrity is not negotiable , that our word must be our bond, that personal desires and ambitions must be moderated by faith, and consideration for others. And so from the many tribes, ethnicities and identities will arise a New People. A new Tribe.
We are at that moment in our history. And it is the historic responsibility of the new tribe to develop an understanding of who we are meant to be as a people, , to develop the capacity to define our place in human history by reaching deeply into the core of our humanity to find the purpose or reason for our existence.
Are we here to live sub-human lives in one form of deprivation or the other? aligned along parochial lines, ignoring merit and value and upholding narrow identities, permitting corruption if it is done by those of our tribe or faith?
In the womb of this New Tribe is the greatness of Nigeria. But Greatness can only come from the willingness of the few to make the sacrifices necessary for the emancipation of the many. This new tribe can build a new nation. I invite you to join the new tribe

President Buhari’s Independence Day Broadcast

01 October 0

In addressing the country today, the president issued his take on the level of Security, Economy and Corruption in Nigeria
Read full address below.
October 1st remains a special date for all Nigerians as this marks the day when we attained one of the most precious of human desires — freedom.
Over the years the country has gone through trials and tribulations, but October 1st is always a day for celebrations.
It is a day for thanksgiving, reflection and re-dedication.
It is also a day for remembrance. We should remind ourselves of the recent journey from 1999 – 2015, when our country happily returned to democratic rule.
However, in spite of oil prices being an average of $100 per barrel and about 2.1m barrels a day, that great piece of luck was squandered and the country’s social and physical infrastructure neglected.
We were left with no savings and huge infrastructure deficit.
The APC Government’s Campaign rallying cry to restore security, re-balance the economy and fight corruption was not all rhetoric.
The country must first be secured. The economy must be re-balanced so that we do not depend on oil alone. We must fight corruption which is Nigeria’s Number One Enemy. Our Administration is tackling these tasks in earnest.
In the past two years, Nigeria has recorded appreciable gains in political freedom. A political Party at the Centre losing elections of State Governor, National Assembly seat and even State Assemblies to the opposition parties is new to Nigeria. Added to these are complete freedom to associate, to hold and disseminate opinions. Such developments clearly attest to the country’s growing political development. But like all freedoms, this is open to abuse.
Recent calls on re-structuring, quite proper in a legitimate debate, has let in highly irresponsible groups to call for dismemberment of the country. We can not and we will not allow such advocacy.
As a young Army Officer, I took part from the beginning to the end in our tragic civil war costing about 2m lives, resulting in fearful destruction and untold suffering. Those who are agitating for a re-run were not born by 1967 and have no idea of the horrendous consequences of the civil conflict which we went through.
I am very disappointed that responsible leaders of these communities do not warn their hot-headed youths what the country went through. Those who were there should tell those who were not there, the consequences of such folly.
At all events, proper dialogue and any desired constitutional changes should take place in a rational manner, at the National and State Assemblies. These are the proper and legal fora for National debate, not some lop-sided, un-democratic body with pre-determined set of objectives.
Government is keeping up the momentum of dialogue with stakeholders in the Niger Delta to keep the peace. We intend to address genuine grievances of the communities.
Government is grateful to the responsible leadership of those communities and will pursue lasting peace in the Niger Delta.
SECURITY
On security, Nigerians must be grateful to our gallant Armed Forces for rolling back the frontiers of Boko Haram’s terrorism, defeating them and reducing them to cowardly attacks on soft and vulnerable targets.
Nigeria is grateful to its neighbours and the international community for the collective efforts to defeat this world-wide menace of terrorism.
Not even the most organized and most equipped police and security forces in the world can escape the menace of modern day terrorism, as we have seen in recent years in Europe and other parts of the world.
But we are not letting up. Our Armed Forces in an effort to enhance the operational capability of troops of OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE have established Mobile Strike Teams in the North East. These will ensure the final push to wipe out the remnants of Boko Haram.
In addition, through targeted air strikes most of the leadership and identified logistics bases and routes of the insurgents have been neutralized. The Armed Forces have established a Naval presence in the Lake Chad Basin as part of the coordinated military efforts to curtail the movements or re-emergence of the sect in the area.
Government is working round the clock to ensure release of the remaining Chibok girls, as well as other persons in Boko Haram captivity. Government will continue to support the Armed Forces and other security agencies to fight not only terrorism, but kidnapping, armed robberies, herdsmen/farmers violence and to ensure peace, stability and security in our country.
ECONOMY
With respect to the economy, the Government has remained pro-active in its diversification policy. The Federal Government’s agricultural Anchor Borrowers Programme, which I launched in November 2015, has been an outstanding success with:
· N43.92 billion released through the CBN and 13 participating institutions,
· 200,000 small holder farmers from 29 states of the federation benefitting,
· 233,000 hectares of farmland cultivating eight commodities, namely Rice, Wheat, Maize, Cotton, soya-beans, Poultry, Cassava and Groundnuts, in addition to fish farming.
These initiatives have been undertaken in close collaboration with the states. I wish to commend the efforts of the Governors of Kebbi, Lagos, Ebonyi and Jigawa States for their support to the rice and fertilizer revolutions.
Equally commendable are contributions of the Governors of Ondo, Edo, Delta, Imo, Cross River, Benue, Ogun, Kaduna and Plateau States for their support for the Presidential initiative for palm oil, rubber, cashew, cassava, potatoes and other crops.
With the abundance of rainfall last year and this year, agriculture has enjoyed Divine intervention.
Since December last year, this Administration has produced over 7 million 50Kg bags of fertilizer. Eleven blending plants with a capacity of 2.1 million metric tons have been reactivated. We have saved $150 million in foreign exchange and N60 billion in subsidy. Fertilizer prices have dropped from N13,000 per 50Kg bag to N5,500.
Furthermore, a new presidential initiative is starting with each state of the Federation creating a minimum of 10,000 jobs for unemployed youths, again with the aid of CBN’s development finance initiatives.
Power remains a huge problem. As of September 12th, production of power reached an all — time high of 7,001 Megawatts. Government is increasing its investment, clearing up the operational and financial log jam bedeviling the industry. We hope to reach 10,000 Megawatts by 2020.
Key priorities include better energy mix through solar and Hydro technologies. I am glad to say that after many years of limbo, Mambilla Power Project has taken off.
Elsewhere in the economy the special window created for manufacturers, investors and exporters, foreign exchange requirements has proved very effective. Since April, about $7 billion has come through this window alone. The main effect of these policies is improved confidence in the economy and better investment sentiments.
The country has recorded 7 consecutive months of lower inflation, Naira rate is beginning to stabilize, appreciating from N525 per $1 in February this year to N360 today. Broad-based economic growth is leading us out of recession.
Furthermore, in order to stabilize the polity, the Federal Government gave additional support to states in the form of:
· State Excess Crude Account loans,
· Budget Support Facility,
· Stabilization Fund Release
to states and local governments as follows:
· N200 billion in 2015
· N441 billion in 2016
· N1 trillion in 2017
Altogether totaling N1.642 trillion.
This was done to enable states to pay outstanding salaries, pensions and small business suppliers who had been all but crippled over the years.
In addition, the Government’s current N500 billion Special Intervention Programme is targeting groups through;
· Home Grown School Feeding Programme,
· N-Power Job creation to provide loans to small-scale traders and artisans,
· Conditional Cash Transfer,
· Family Homes Fund and
· Social Housing Scheme.
CORRUPTION
Fellow Nigerians,
We are fully aware that fighting corruption was never going to be a straightforward task. We expected corrupt elements to use any weapon to fight back, mainly judicial obstruction and political diversion. But we are determined to eradicate corruption from our body politic.
In this fight, the Government has:
· Empowered teams of prosecutors,
· Assembled detailed databases,
· Accelerated the recovery of stolen funds.
The Administration’s new institutional reforms include:
· Enforcing Treasury Single Account,
· Whistle-Blowers Policy,
· Integrated Payroll Personnel and Information System.
We have signed multi-lateral cooperation agreements on criminal matters with friendly countries. There are signs of increasing cooperation from the Judiciary. Recently the Chief Justice of Nigeria directed Heads of all our Courts of first instance and Appeal to accelerate hearings of corruption cases and dismiss any judicial officers found to have been compromised.
Justice Salami has just been appointed to chair the Judiciary’s anti-graft committee. Government expects a lot from this Committee.
I commend the National Assembly for refocusing on its oversight committees. They should, in addition, ensure swift passage of enabling corruption laws. But fighting corruption is a bottom to top operation. I call on all Nigerians to combat corruption at every turn. By not asking for and refusing to accept a bribe, by reporting unethical practices or by blowing a whistle, together we can beat corruption. The government for its part will work for accountability at all levels – Federal, State and Local Governments. CHANGE will then be real.
As we enter the second half of our term of office, we intend to accelerate progress and intensify our resolve to fix the country’s challenges and problems.
Thank you and a happy holiday to all of you.
God bless our country

Biafra: US Government Finally States Their View Of IPOB.

24 September 0

The United States Government has stated that it does not view the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organisation, despite its proscription.

This was disclosed by the spokesman for the American Embassy in Nigeria, Russell Brooks.

He maintained that the US is, however, committed to Nigeria’s unity and is in support of all moves that would de-escalate tensions.

“The United States Government is strongly committed to Nigeria’s unity.  Important political and economic issues affecting the Nigerian people, such as the allocation of resources, are worthwhile topics for respectful debate in a democracy.

“Within the context of unity, we encourage all Nigerians to support a de-escalation of tensions and peaceful resolution of grievances.  The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a terrorist organisation under US law,” he told The Punch.

He declined to answer questions on the US position on the agitation for Biafra.

IPOB was on Wednesday, proscribed by the federal government after the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), received the go-ahead from an Abuja High Court as stipulated by the Constitution.

The group was declared a terrorist organisation and the AGF said the order would soon be gazetted.

This immediately followed the group’s condemnation by all the state governors in the South East of Nigeria under the aegis of the South East Governors Forum

For daring Adeboye, Buhari sacks FRC boss, announces replacement

09 January 0
The executive secretary of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, Jim Obazee, has been sacked by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The president also ordered the reconstitution of the council.
Adedotun Sulaiman has been appointed as chairman and Daniel Asapokhai as the new executive secretary for the council.
This was disclosed in a statement by Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity.
Sulaiman was a former managing partner/director of Arthur Anderson and later, Accenture. He is a chartered accountant. He is a graduate of the University of Lagos and Harvard Business School.
Asopokhai is a partner and a financial reporting specialist at the PricewaterHouseCoopers (PWC), Nigeria. He is a graduate of the University of Lagos and the University of Pretoria.
Buhari has also instructed the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment to invite the 19 ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government and private sector organizations specified in the FRC Act to nominate members of the board of the council.
Recall that earlier report disclosed that the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah, and Obazee were at loggerhead over a regulation by the FRCNwhich stipulates 20 years tenure for heads of religious groups and civil society groups in the country.
This regulation was the reason Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God made Pastor Joseph Obayemi the national overseer of the church in Nigeria.
Enelamah was said to have written the FRC boss asking him not to implement the controversial regulation but Obazee refused the instruction of the minister.

Leadership crisis in Edo APC

06 January 0
There is currently tension in the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) following the leadership crisis within Oredo Local Government Area which led to the last week remand of the state Youth Leader of the party, Comrade Osakpanwa Eriyo in prison by the magistrate court in Benin. Sadly, Oredo is the local government council of the state governor, Godwin Obaseki and some other powerful leaders of the APC in the state including the state Secretary of the party and Obazulu of Benin Kingdom, Chief Osaro Idah, Lawrence Orka, immediate past Chief of Staff to the governor, Patrick Obahiagbon, Rasaq Bello-Osagie, former Speaker of the House and Ambassador Designate, Uyi Igbe, Rev. Mike Egharevba, Prince Austin Eweka, Osaro Obaze, Mrs Adams and many others.
This is the first major crisis in the council confronting the governor in his own backyard. The battle for the soul of the party is between the state youth leader of APC, Comrade Eriyo and Chief Osaro Idah who is backed by the entire leaders of the party in the council including Governor Obaseki. Osakpanwa has his list of party executives in the council while Chief Idah has his.
Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki
Background of the crisis
Apart from being the state Youth leader of the APC, Comrade Eriyo is the state chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria(RTEAN) and one of the fearless youths in the state who embraced APC from its inception in the state. He is regarded as one of the immediate past governor Adams Oshiomhole’s top field soldiers in Edo South. Having been empowered by the past administration, he built a political empire for himself controlling over 30,000 youths across the state whom he empowered. He is therefore regarded as a god father to many of them. It was not surprising therefore that he was pushing for the control of the party in Oredo. The party in Oredo was factionalized prior to the governorship primaries of the APC.
Though majority of the leaders including Osakpanwa agreed to back Obaseki, but they have differences in terms of the leadership of the party in the council. That was why Chief Idah who knew that the former Chief of Staff to Oshiomhole, Patrick Obahiagbon (Igodomigodo) was a neutral person in the power play, got him to convene a meeting of the leadership of the party in Oredo so that they can all speak with one voice to ensure victory for Obaseki.
That was how Igodomigodo became the convener of the Leadership Forum under the supervision of Chief Idah who is the state Secretary of the party and they succeeded in bringing all the factions together. The Forum believed that Osakpanwa cannot be the leader of the party when the state Secretary of the party, Chief Idah is from the local government.
And their fear is that if allowed, Osakpanwa with his wealth and political influence, is capable of anointing a commissioner and the chairman of the Local Government whenever Obaseki decides to hold Local Government election. They therefore resolved to stop him. Initially Osakpanwa who believed that this Forum might thwart his ambition to become the leader of the party in the Local Government, did not welcome the idea of the meeting but he later started attending when he found out that their candidate, now governor Obaseki had embraced the group.
That was how the leaders temporarily pushed the leadership battle aside to go for the primaries which Obaseki eventually won. In unison the leaders worked assiduously to ensure victory for Obaseki at the general election. Ensuring victory for Obaseki in his own backyard was very critical to the overall result of the election, especially when they have it at the back of their minds that the PDP candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu’s ancestral home is in Oredo Local Government and therefore has his supporters there.
However, on the 23rd of December, 2016, when Governor Obaseki invited Edo South APC leaders to Government House for a leadership meeting, two list of Executives emerged from Oredo. Chief Idah presented one list which was accepted by the meeting while the one presented by Osakpanwa was rejected and that was why Osakpanwa’s loyalists were stopped from entering that meeting.
Hell was then let loose when his loyalists stormed Government House insisting that they must enter the meeting. It was in that state of confusion that Osakpanwa was alleged to told Chief Idah in anger that he will be killed the way his father, Late Chief Idah was murdered. He was alleged to have also threatened the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to Obaseki, Mr Haruna.
He however denied these allegations saying he was being framed up by the party just to rubbish him. During the pandemonium on that day, it was learnt that some of the cows and rams which the governor bought as Christmas gift to party leaders were carted away by the rampaging youths. Obaseki was said to have felt insulted with the entire episode, particularly when he was being accused of masterminding the humiliation of Osakpanwa after supporting him to win the governorship election.
But the leaders argued that support for the governor should not translate into insulting a sitting governor. It was alleged that even after the Government House saga, Osakpanwa attended a meeting at the residence of the chairman of the party in Oredo, Dr Okoro the next day, where they were said to have equally made some unfriendly comments.
It was consequent upon this alleged threat that Chief Idah petitioned the Police alleging threat to his life. Chief Idah’s petition is understandable because the brutal murder of his father in 1992, is one of the high profile assassinations in the state which the killers are yet to be found. His late father was then the chairman of Oredo Local Government Area and one of the powerful politicians in the state then. However, the political tension in the state heightened after Osakpanwa was arrested by the police on the 27th December, 2016 with other party leaders in Oredo.
Over 20,000 youths thereafter invaded the state Police Command demanding his release. Osakpanwa was said to have attempted suicide at the Police Command when he used a broken bottle to cut his body with blood flowing freely before the police held him while he cursed Governor Godwin Obaseki whom he accused of being behind his travail. Amidst tight security, the police was able to whisk Osakpanwa to the magistrate court along Sapele Road at about 3pm last week Thursday 29, December 2016.
He was arraigned with another chieftain of the party, Sunday Osagbona, for alleged conspiracy and attempted murder of Chief Idah. When Eriyo was brought to court, he yelled at the police demanding why he was in handcuff when he was not a criminal. He said, “why are you charging me for attempted murder, did I kill anybody, I am not a criminal, the governor is only trying to oppress me, I have not done anything”. The pleas by their Counsel, Usunobun Evbayiro, that they should be granted custody in the police cell due to their ill health were rejected by the Magistrate.
But the presiding Magistrate, M.C Ojobo said she lacked such powers and that prison custody was the proper place to remand them since there are health facilities at the prisons. She said she lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter and ordered the case file to be sent to the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice. The matter was then adjourned to January 13, 2017 for mentioning.
However, Saturday Vanguard learnt that the leader of the party in the state and immediate past governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has waded into the matter while Osakpanwa is currently cooling off in the prison. It was equally learnt that Oshiomhole who has been on holidays was not happy with the alleged threat on the life of Chief Idah and attempt to insult the sitting governor.
It was learnt that the former governor has been consulting with the leadership of the party to find an amicable resolution of the matter so as to avoid unnecessary division in the party. The former governor who was able to manage this sort of party crisis effectively during his reign is aware that the PDP is celebrating this seeming crack and he is determined to disappoint them once again.
However, the crisis is causing anxiety in the party particularly when the result of the governorship election is still being contested at the governorship election Tribunal by the PDP. That is why the party leaders believe that though Osakpanwa should be tamed but they must also be careful about the future of the party especially now that Governor Obaseki has stopped these youths who are staunch supporters of APC from collecting any form of revenue.
From the result declared by INEC in Edo South, it shows clearly that it is not yet uhuru for the APC and any attempt to mishandle the crisis in the party in Oredo which is the biggest Local Government Area in the state may spell doom for the party.

The Punch reports that Justice Muslim Hassam on Friday, January 6, ordered that the funds allegedly stolen by Diezani from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) be forfeited to the Federal government.

The order was in favour of an exparte motion presented to the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday seeking the temporary forfeiture of the funds.
According to the presiding judge, the forfeiture is temporary but could become permanent if in 14 days representatives of the three banks do not appear before the court to prove the legitimacies of the funds in their keep.
The Punch reports that in the exparte application, an EFCC investigator Moses Awolusi claimed that it was discovered that sometime in December 2014, Diezani invited an ex-Managing Director of a bank Nnamdi Okonkwo to her office where they hatched the plan of how a cash sum of $153,310,000 would be moved from NNPC to be saved for Diezani.
Awolusi said Diezani instructed Okonkwo to make sure that the money was “neither credited into any known account nor captured in any transaction platforms” of the bank.
Okonjo-Iweala denies fake statements
Nigeria’s ex-finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has denied reports that she has been commenting on the Nigerian economy.
In a statement signed by Paul Nwabukwu, her media aide, Okonjo-Iweala said she has never commented on the Nigerian economy and will only do when she is ready.
The statement read: “The comments on the performance of the Nigerian economy being circulated by unknown persons and attributed to Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala were not made by her. Like the previous fake audio by an imposter pretending to be her, this is another desperate action by mischievous persons.
“The former minister doesn't need anyone to speak for her because, as everyone knows, she is very capable of speaking for herself. We urge the media and Nigerian public to ignore these petty gimmicks.”

Speaker of house of Assembly impeached!!

29 December 0

The Speaker of the Abia state House of Assembly, Martins Azubuike, has been impeached.

Hon Azubuike was impeached on Thursday afternoon, December 29, after 20 of the 24 lawmakers in the Assembly voted to impeach him.
A new speaker, Honourable Kennedy Njoku, has been sworn in, Channels TV reports.
Though the circumstances surrounding Mr. Azubuike’s impeachment remains unclear, the Cable reports that the three-term lawmaker was said to have fallen out with the powers that be in the state.
He was elected speaker in June and has survived at least four impeachment threats within six months.
Clinton Uba, the spokesperson for Azubuike told the Sun prior to the impeachment that his boss did not commit any impeachable offense.
“Mr. Speaker is innocent. An attempt to impeach the speaker, who has been carrying every member along can only heat up the polity
Adding that: the sixth assembly has been the most peaceful, despite its composition.
“The speaker has also been very supportive to the executive. Until we get to the house and see the alleged impeachment notice, I will be guided in my response but, I can confirm to you that the plot to remove my boss is no longer secret. My advice to the aggrieved members is to have a rethink and place the interest of the state above self," Uba said.
Shortly before he was impeached, Mr. Azubuike looked disturbed after all the lawmakers arrived at the Assembly complex earlier in the day.
Shortly after their arrival, an aide to Mr Azubuike sent all the journalists away from the premises, but one of the lawmakers, however, insisted that the journalists must stay to monitor the House proceedings.
The House of Assembly complex was reported to have been surrounded by armed Police personnel.
